mand for canned beer in Rwanda
is relatively low, but in order to
meet this as well, the brewery imports
the Skol Lager brand in cans
from Belgium. It exports its own
Skol beer to Burundi, Mozambique
and Djibouti, a small country on the
Horn of Africa.
For the future, the Skol Brewery
already has some ambitious plans:
“Beer consumption in Rwanda is
directly dependent on economic
growth. This has been running at
around seven percent per annum
in recent years, and is expected
to keep on rising. We have lots
of young people, who in the near
future will grow up to be potential
beer consumers. If all goes well,
we can start thinking about
another Krones bottling line,”
says Eustache Mpiko. M
training on particularly important
machines, like filler, labeler and
empty-bottle inspector. And if
some assistance from Krones was
nonetheless required, a service
technician from the center in Nairobi
could arrive on site within six
to eight hours. “The proximity of
the center was also an advantage
in Krones’ favor,” comments Eustache
Mpiko. And a maintenance
agreement with Krones is on the
agenda upon expiry of the warranty
period. SBL has already concluded
a remote service agreement.
Keep on growing
Skol’s biggest market is the capital
Kigali, in which around two million
of Rwanda’s twelve million people
live. The beer is usually purchased
by the consumers in individual bottles,
and drunk in modestly sized
sales outlets. A small 0.33-liter bottle
of Skol Malt costs the equivalent
of about 50 eurocents. The de-
